I started this blog ten years ago with this quote "Gardening is something I enjoy, but not something I am good at. So, in the vein of, it is all a learning experience, I have started this blog in the hopes that in, say, ten years or so, I may have actually learned something. :o)" Ten years later and I have learned so much. My gardens bring me so much joy. I still have much more to learn, but I no longer feel as though I have two black thumbs... so i guess this blog worked :)

A break in the cold!
After our gorgeous 60 degree days in early February, this cold winter week feels like Winter's last hurrah. A whole week of temperatures in the thirties, with a few days dipping below freezing.

Planting potatoes
I purchased a bunch of potatoes from the Natural Gardener again this year. In addition to the red potatoes and ratte potatoes that I planted last year, I also picked up some Yukon Gold. I should have counted before I put them in, but I am guessing I had almost twenty different "parts". For the bigger potatoes, I cut them into golf ball sized portions which had at least two eyes.

Obedient plant and St. John's wort
A few years ago I purchased an obedient plant for one of my front beds. It was completely overtaken by the other primrose jasmine in the bed, so I decided to try transplanting it to my back bed. Now, I vaguely recall my mother saying to remember that an 'Obedient plant isn't very obedient at all', but it seemed like a good idea.
Trimming Roses on Valentines
The traditional day for trimming back roses is Valentine's Day, I am told. So, when today's cool morning warmed up into a beautiful afternoon, I figured it was time.

Blackberries, tomatoes and more
I purchased some potatoes from the N atural Gardener today. I am going to cut and air them today; I also prepared the soil for them.
Tomatoes
Okay, I seriously know better than this.
I do.
But I was at the Natural Gardener, and they had tomatoes for sale... complete with lots of "It is too early to put tomatoes in the ground" warning signs.
But after a miserable year of tomatoes last year, I *really* want some tomatoes.
And today is a gorgeous 60 degree day.
And I want to get them in early.
And there is a freeze forecasted for mid-week next week.
Too early. Yeah, I know. Maybe I can keep them warm?
But hey, it was only $3. ;o)
