New natives

Purchased in September 2025

Mahonia Swansea’s Texas Barberry

wildflower center says full sun, but I have seen this growing at Mirasol Ranch in dappled shade.  Shrub goes 3ft to 6ft. Plant on along the back fence in the back yard under the Ashe junipers, plan the other under the lady oak in the front yard yard

pines remote Texas Pinyon pine

Say to plant on hillsides and slopes, part shade, up to 45 feet tall. No hillsides in our backyard. I  put it behind the bench in the back right corner gardeb

Condalia hookeri Brazilian bluewood plant away from walkways due to thorny branches, low maintenance, Part shade, 12 to 36 feet. Totally missed how big this can get. Larval host: Snout and

Tamaulipan Agapema butterflies. Want to put this somewhere in the front yard because of the thorns, or deep in a garden. Hmm, may have put this in the wrong place, I think I put it in the backyard right corner garden, about 5 feet from the bench.  If it really gets that big, and sharp, it may need to move.

Yearesia platystegia endemic Texas Wild Shrimp plant. like wildflower center says moist, and may winter over. Part sun. Up to 2 feet tall. I will put this in my street garden near the driveway. It is shade by the street live oak.

Sideroxylon lanuginosum gum bumelia up to 50 feet tall (I have never seen them very large). Sun dry. Solar garden. When I planted this tree, its roots were very wrapped around themselves.  I thought about returning the plants, because I feel like it is going to have issues later one, but we'll see.

Damianita -  I have killed this at least twice, maybe more. Low water, full sun. Will find a place in my front garden. (Update - two months later, and it is almost already dead. Just a few leaves left on it.)

Hill country penstemon

sun and dry, will put in my front garden bed by the street.

Purchase November 2025 at the Austin Native plant sale

BeebrushAloysia gratissimaShrubSun, Part ShadeLow, Medium

Planted in the solar garden. Kyle picked a place where its base would be shaded from the sun from the surrounding plants, but its leaves will be in the sun. I kinda think it is going to be in the sun for most of the day, but we'll see.

Planted 1 gallon in the Almond Verbena  / Persimmon left garden bed. Planted the two small plants in the solar garden. The first one is near the large pot, and the second one near the spiky plant

DamianitaChrysactinia mexicanaShrubSunVery Low, Low
Got this one from the VECAL celebration. The one I bought before is already dying. I put this in the same place I put the one before that died. It really seems like the perfect place for it. so i thought I'd try one more time. It is near the Pride of Barbados in the solar garden.

Bought two small ones of these. Planted them in the solar garden by the Thrallis.

Very excited about this tree. We planted it in the back yard. I tried to put fencing around it to keep the dogs from digging it up.

Hairy Tube-tongueJusticia pilosellaHerbaceousPart ShadeLow
I have already killed this plant once. Thought I'd try again, 'cause I'm a sucker. This time I put it in the front garden near the American Agave. Last time, it didn't make it through the winter. We'll see how it does this year. It also had a tough transplant, so we'll see.

Rattlesnake MasterEryngium yuccifoliumHerbaceousSunLow, Medium
Planted this is the solar garden near the rose bush and prickly pear. Gosh. It looks waaay to cool and beautiful to thrive in my garden.

Roughleaf DogwoodCornus drummondiiTreePart Shade, ShadeLow
Most expensive plant I bought (5 gallon). I planted this in the front yard. The note said it does best with mostly shade, but 4 hours of sun. Hoping it will be shaded by the left Live Oak most of the day, then get some evening sun.

Western IronweedVernonia baldwiniiHerbaceousSun, Part ShadeLow
I haven't managed to kill the one I bought last year, so I thought I'd buy a second. This one I planted in the solar garden

Wild Red ColumbineAquilegia canadensisHerbaceousPart Shade, ShadeLow, Medium
Yeah - because I just can't kill enough Columbine. I bought four small pots. Two in the front right garden by the Zizote milkweed, and two in the front left garden, by the Twist of Lime Abelia

Woolly IronweedVernonia lindheimeriHerbaceousSunLow
Again, I managed to keep my first one alive, so let's go for two. I can't remember where I planted this

ChismePortulaca pilosaHerbaceousSun, Part ShadeLow, Medium
Kyle picked out this one. I think because it was edible. I cannot think of Portulaca, without thinking of my mom. She loved Portulaca, and was always convincing me to try and put it in my garden. And it always died. Here you go, Mom. One more time for you. Maybe you can share your light from heaven and it will grow.

Dalea Compacta
This was for sale, but not on the plant list. I bought it last year, nursed it along. It made it through the winter, and then died very quickly in the spring. Kyle wanted me to try it again for some reason.

Almond Verbena
This was a cutting from my plant in the back. I know it isn't a native, but I love the smell of it so much, that I wanted to add one to the front yard. This plant needs a lot of water, so we will see how it does. I planted it in the solar garden.
