Mid-March Garden update

With two days of rain in the forecast, I wanted to get the last of my spring veggies in.  So, I ran out to the Natural Gardener right when it opened.  They didn't have any plants of zucchini or tomatillo so I purchased seeds.  They did have some pepper plants, though. I also planted the cucumber seeds we have had for a couple of weeks and also picked up some basil and thyme.

Right now the potatoes are just starting to come up.  Looks like they are a little behind last year.  I have seven that have come up, but hope for a few more in the next few days.

I think we've made it through the cold!

Very cold temps, heavy rains and now a warming.  I think we've made it through winter. The peach trees are just starting to put out pink buds.  This early bloomer is already starting to look a bit like a flower!

Early March Garden Update

This month we had another late freeze, with temperatures falling to the mid-twenties on March 6th. We have two days of heavy rain ahead, and then some sunny days. At that point, I will have a better idea of what is going to make it through the winter, and what has died.

I am currently harvesting asparagus, cilantro and lettuce. I am hoping to harvest some radishes and maybe my cabbage this month.

I have planted seven tomatoes and a few leeks and I am hoping to plant some zucchini, eggplant, and cucumbers in a week or so. I am also hoping that my potato plants start popping up in a few weeks!

A cold day in February

After some gorgeous spring days, a cold winter storm brought in some freezing rain. Temperatures dipped just below freezing, but enough to cover everything with a layer of ice.

K found that he could pull the ice off of leaves, and they would leave this beautiful image.

A break in the cold!

After our gorgeous 60 degree days in early February, this cold winter week feels like Winter's last hurrah.  A whole week of temperatures in the thirties, with a few days dipping below freezing.  

Planting potatoes

I purchased a bunch of potatoes from the Natural Gardener again this year. In addition to the red potatoes and ratte potatoes that I planted last year, I also picked up some Yukon Gold.  I should have counted before I put them in, but I am guessing I had almost twenty different "parts".  For the bigger potatoes, I cut them into golf ball sized portions which had at least two eyes.
